Cardio Connection
If you want to get the heart pumping, how about a sporty date? Bike or hike through the iconic trails of Pacific Spirit Park; with beams of sunlight pouring through the stoic evergreens while you spend the day with your number one. For a more urban experience, there are new cycling lanes down UBLVD and Wesbrook Mall, so you can safely boot around the village on a little sightseeing tour of the shops and eateries.
Need to cool off? There’s always Wreck Beach. Swim or simply stroll along the beautiful shoreline and take in one of the most breathtaking sunsets you’ll ever see. So, where’s the cardio in watching a sun disappear beyond a golden orange horizon? The steep hike with steps built in from the shore back up to the trail is like a Stairmaster in the trees.
Floral Flirtation
Who says old school romance is dead? Flowers can still go a long way to make an impression. For this, the UBC Rose Garden is your place. Take your sweetheart to this magical flower-power wonderland. With spectacular views of the mountains and ocean, and roses of every colour in full bloom throughout summer, this is the ultimate setting for a romantic afternoon – no matter where you are in the dating cycle.
There’s also the UBC Botanical Garden, where you can go on an international tour of plants from around the world. Highlights include the David C. Lam Asian Garden, the Carolinian Forest Garden, and of course, the BC Rainforest Garden. You can walk on the grounds or experience all that beautiful biodiversity from the Greenheart TreeWalk, a self-guided treetop canopy walkway up above. This stunning aerial trail system consists of mesh bridges suspended between giant Douglas Firs and Cedars. It’s a beautiful way to take in all the magnificent flora and fauna with minimal impact to the forest floor.
Dry-Run Drink
Feel like keeping it casual with your potential new love interest? Start with a meet n’ greet on a café patio. It’s the most efficient way to conduct a quick and easy chemistry test without committing to a full meal and UBC has no shortage of great patios to check out. There’s JJ Bean, Great Dane Café, Blenz, or The Boulevard Coffee Roasting Co. to name just a few. All with funky little sidewalk patios, complete with tables for two!
And if you’re thirsty for something a little stronger, another great date idea is happy hour. Enjoy a nice cool pint of IPA at BierCraft or a refreshing cucumber-infused G&T at Browns Crafthouse – both establishments boast spacious and vibrant patios. What better way to test the waters than cocktails and conversation on a lively deck? And if things are going well and you’re hungry for something a little more substantial than appies, stay for dinner or simply head to one of the many other restaurants peppered throughout campus. Here, you can satiate any craving, so feel free to wine and dine to your heart’s content.
